The SeagullModel-making & Sculptural
Theatre and Costume Design brief for Anton Chekhov's The Seagull (BA brief)
Designing the sets for The Seagull, I wanted to visualise the metaphors that are continually referenced within Chekhov's play. To do this, I de-contructed the characters and spaces, and then re-constructed the piece according to the principles that the play is based upon. I designed for the whole play, constructing two of my designs as 1:25 scale set models.
The characters in this play are extremely complex, however I was determined to avoid revealing too much about each character through their visual appearance, choosing to define character through expressions of colour (or indeed lack of). Whilst designing, It was also important that I understood fully the meaning of one character to another, and the types of relationships that are portrayed within the play.
